Materials List for Gass-Brown Watercolor Workshop
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
In this workshop, we will be exploring some of the more fascinating and useful aspects and approaches of watercolor painting. These include:
Suggested Materials
Generally speaking for most of you who have worked in watercolor, the required supplies — brushes, paints, palette and paper — should already be in your possession.
Paper: I usually prefer and use cold- pressed 140 lb. paper ( Fabriano, Arches, Saunders Waterford, etc.).
Paints: I usually enjoy and prefer working with a limited palette — either a triad of three transparent primaries, OR just a warm and cool version of each primary will be sufficient. Colors that I frequently use are:
REDS: Winsor Red, Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Quin. Magenta, Winsor Violet & Opera Pink
YELLOWS: New Gamboge, Aureolin, Raw Sienna, Winsor Yellow, Lemon Yellow & Burnt Sienna
BLUES: Cobalt Blue, Cerulean, Ultramarine Blue, Winsor Blue, Winsor Green & Turquoise Blue
Brushes: I prefer and use mostly large rounds and a smaller one ( like a rigger) for finishing details. For initially wetting my paper, I use large flats, 2” and 3”. Use whatever YOU are partial to and comfortable with!
Additional supplies:
Photos: Bring some relevant photos for reference material. I will be ( only occasionally) be using my photos of flowers when I need additional information to suggest a shape or “entertain” in an area.
