How to calculate the selling price of an item and allow for gallery commission
The price you want to get as the artist is $150. The commission at the gallery is 35%
The calculation is done using the following steps:
The price you want to get as the artist is $150. The commission at the gallery is 35%
The calculation is done using the following steps:
- Subtract 35% from 100%. That equals 65%. This represents the amount you want to get for the work based on the selling price, which equals 100%.
- Divide 65% into the price you want to receive. $150 divided by .65. The answer is $230.77, which would be the selling price. Of course, rounding to some whole number would be appropriate; for example, rounding $230.77 to $230 or $235.
- To prove that this is the correct amount for a selling price, multiply $230 (selling price) x .35 (gallery commission), and you will get the commission amount—$80.50.
- Subtract $80.50 from $230 and you will get $149.50.
- So, to get the desired $150 for the piece in this case, you would have to increase the selling price to say $235, which would give you $152.75 after the commission is deducted.
