The Power of Pen, Ink, & Watercolor
with Cheryl Knowles-Harrigan
This powerhouse combination of media can result in beautiful classical studies or prompt, spirited, drawings embellished with watercolor. Both pen and ink and watercolor will be explored along with techniques to better see your values in monochrome and color. This is a see-it, do-it workshop, and all three subject matters - the figure, still-life, and landscape (including trees from the SCAL general meeting demo in May) will contribute to your pen, ink, and watercolor drawing and painting skills.
We will start by toning two sheets of watercolor paper. (The myth is that watercolor is done on white paper—hence, the more classical method.) While they are drying, We will cover basic pen strokes, techniques, and mark-making with a pen—we won’t paint at first. I will be demonstrating that form is critical. We will add monochrome, blue, and brown, and both combined. Using some acrylic white, we will also experience recovering the whites in a drawing or painting and using tints to make adjustments.
Post-workshop resources will be provided including some exercises to try on your own!
SUPPLIES and you probably already have most of them:

SUPPLIES and you probably already have most of them:
- A sturdy 9 x 12 or 11 x 14 sketchbook and watercolor paper. (Cheryl uses Canson’s Mix Media (blue cover) XL sketchbook that has 98-pound paper AND Canson's Montval Cold Press 140-pound wire-bound sketchbook both 9 x 12 inches.) If your sketchbook has lighter paper, or you don't have a watercolor sketchbook, some scraps of watercolor paper can supplement your sketchbook for the exercises where watercolor is added. We will be working between different sketchbooks or watercolor paper scraps. If using scraps of paper, you will need some masking or artist’s tape.
- An office or 2B pencil
- A white eraser
- A black permanent Sakura Micron pen (fine tip), small point Sharpie, OR a black ballpoint pen in a pinch
- Two round brushes that are soft and come to a point for wash accents (a 2 and 6 OR a small and larger pointed round brush should do) and ¼ - ½ inch flat soft brush.
- A set of watercolors and a really inexpensive set is just fine. (The 12-pan Yarka Semi-Moist Watercolor Pan Sets can be found online for under 10 dollars.) That is what I will be using.
- Some fruits and vegetables, branches, and a pinecone for observational sketches
- One small tube of white acrylic paint (any brand)
- Miscellaneous: A large container for water, paper towels, white eraser.
- Photographs will be provided for landscape and figure exercises.
